Jose Mourinho has been sacked by Manchester United after the 3-1 defeat to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The Red Devils sit 19 points behind Liverpool in the Premier League.
Yesterday United drew Paris Saint-Germain in the last 16 of the Champions League.
But United have decided to make a change mid-season and bring a close to his time at the club.
A club statement read: “Manchester United announces that manager Jose Mourinho has left the club with immediate effect.
“The club would like to thank Jose for his work during his time at Manchester United and to wish him success in the future.
“A new caretaker manager will be appointed until the end of the current season, while the club conducts a thorough recruitment process for a new, full-time manager.”
Mourinho sacked by Man Utd hours after key Ed Woodward phone call
Jose Mourinho is no longer Manchester United manager after he was sensationally sacked this morning.
The Portuguese boss reported to training as normal at 9.02am this morning,
He was pictured in the back of his expensive black Jaguar XJ with his chauffeur – and looked relaxed as he entered the Carrington training complex.
But just forty-four minutes later – at 9.46am this morning – his tenure as Old Trafford boss was over.
Sources claim a late-night phone call between Joel Glazer and Ed Woodward sealed the Portuguese boss’ fate and ended his time at the club.
